How to Avoid Losing Wi-Fi Connection When Changing a Router?
Preface:
When you need to replace your home router or change the wireless network name and password, following the steps in this guide will help ensure that your CYVIO smart cameras and other IoT devices remain online, minimizing service interruptions caused by network configuration changes.
General Preparation Steps
Before starting any operation, be sure to record the key information of your current router:
1. Wi-Fi network name (SSID)
2. Wi-Fi password
3. Network encryption type
Solution 1: Seamless Transition for All CYVIO Wi-Fi–Enabled Devices
This solution applies to Wi-Fi cameras and NVRs that connect via a wireless network.
Method 1: Configure the New Router with the Same Settings as the Old Router
1. After powering on the new router and completing the initial network setup, log in to its admin interface.
2. Go to the wireless network settings page and set the SSID, password, and security mode for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to be exactly the same as those recorded from the old router.
3. Save the settings and restart the new router, then disconnect the old router from power. Your wireless devices will automatically reconnect to the new router.
Method 2: Use a Mobile Hotspot as a Temporary Bridge
1. Before replacing the router or changing its settings, create a personal hotspot using your smartphone.
2. Set the hotspot name (SSID) and password to be exactly the same as the currently working old Wi-Fi network.
3. Allow the devices that need to stay online to connect to this mobile hotspot.
4. After completing the new router configuration, open the CYVIO App and switch the device Wi-Fi to the new router. Once the connection is successful, turn off the mobile hotspot and the device will remain connected to the new router.
Note:
Steps to configure the network for devices in the CYVIO App are as follows:
Pan-tilt camera C2 / Battery bullet cameras B220 & B221:
CYVIO Home page → tap the top-right icon → Channel Settings → Wi-Fi Configuration → select the target Wi-Fi, enter the password, and tap Join.
Battery Doorbell R112:
Tap the top-right icon → Device Settings → Network Connection → Base Station Network Connection → select the target Wi-Fi, enter the password, and tap Join.
N1814 / N1812:
Tap the top-right icon → Device Settings → Network Connection → NVR Network Connection → Wireless → search for available Wi-Fi networks, select the desired one, enter the correct password, and tap Join to complete the connection.
Solution 2: Non-Disruptive Switching for Devices Supporting Both Wired and Wi-Fi Connections
This solution is especially suitable for N1814 / N1812 NVR products that support Ethernet connections.
Method 3: Use a Wired Connection to Guide the Wireless Configuration Update
1. First, use an Ethernet cable to connect your device to the new router that has already been fully configured and has normal internet access.
2. After the device comes online via the wired network, connect the device to a monitor or open the CYVIO App to access the device’s Wi-Fi configuration page.
NVR Connected to a Monitor – Steps
1. Right-click with the mouse, locate and click Configuration (gear icon).
2. Go to Network → Network Settings → Wireless. The system will scan for nearby Wi-Fi networks.
3. Select the desired Wi-Fi network, enter the correct password, and click Join to complete the connection.
4. After confirming that the device has successfully connected via Wi-Fi, you can remove the Ethernet cable to complete the migration.
CYVIO App – Steps
1. Ensure the device is connected to the CYVIO cloud service.
2. On the CYVIO Home page, tap the top-right icon and select Device Settings.
3. Go to Network Connection → NVR Network Connection → Wireless. The app will search for available Wi-Fi networks.
4. Select the target Wi-Fi network, enter the correct password, and tap Join to complete the connection.
5. After confirming that the device is successfully connected via Wi-Fi, remove the Ethernet cable to complete the migration.
Solution 3: Device Reset and Reconfiguration
If none of the above methods restore normal operation, please reset the device to factory settings.
1.Locate the reset button on the device.
How do I reset the camera to factory settings?
2.After the device restarts and indicates that it is ready for configuration, open the CYVIO App and follow the new device setup process to configure a new Wi-Fi connection.
