How to clean the Security Camera lens?
21 Jan 2026
Cleaning a camera lens requires proper technique to avoid damaging the lens or the camera itself. This step-by-step guide explains the correct way to clean a surveillance camera lens.
Step 1: Prepare the proper cleaning tools
- Microfiber cloth: Soft and lint-free, highly effective at removing fingerprints and oil without scratching the lens surface. This is the core tool for lens cleaning.
- Lens cleaning solution: A specially formulated liquid that helps clean and maintain the camera lens without damaging the lens coating.
- Compressed air can (or single-direction air blower): Safely removes loose dust and debris from the lens without touching it. Choose a model with a fine nozzle for precise operation.
- Soft brush (optional): Soft bristles are suitable for cleaning lens edges, camera body crevices, or areas that compressed air cannot reach.
- Security camera cleaning rod (optional): Useful for cameras installed in hard-to-reach locations, eliminating the need for ladders or climbing.
Note: Avoid using paper towels, regular cloths, alcohol, dishwashing liquid, or other non-specialized materials. These may scratch the lens or damage its coating.
Step 2: Power off the camera and ensure safety
Before cleaning, always turn off the camera and, if possible, unplug it to prevent liquid from causing a short circuit or accidental damage.
- For cameras installed at height, ensure cleaning rods, ladders, or other tools are stable.
- For outdoor cameras, choose a calm, dry day with minimal dust to prevent debris or rain from interfering with cleaning.
Step 3: Clean the camera and lens
1.Remove loose dirt:
- If the camera exterior has dust, leaves, or loose debris, use a soft brush to gently sweep it away, preventing scratches.
- Then, use the compressed air can to blow the lens surface from the center outward, maintaining a distance of 10–15 cm. Repeat 2–3 times to remove fine dust and debris.
Cautions:
- Do not spray continuously on one spot to avoid overheating the lens.
- Do not blow with your mouth, as saliva can leave water spots.
2.Remove stubborn stains:
- If the lens still has water spots, oil, or other stubborn dirt, dampen a microfiber cloth with a few drops of lens cleaning solution (do not soak). Avoid spraying liquid directly on the lens to prevent it from seeping inside the camera.
- Use a spiral motion, wiping slowly from the center outward. After each circle, use a clean section of the cloth. Avoid repeatedly wiping the same dirty area.
- For lens edges, mounting crevices, or hard-to-reach corners, wrap a small piece of microfiber cloth around the cleaning rod tip, or use a lint-free cotton swab lightly moistened with cleaning solution. Be gentle to avoid scratching the lens.
3.Final check:
- After cleaning, blow the lens surface lightly with compressed air again.
- If any residue remains, gently wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
Step 4: Reassemble and verify
- Ensure the camera’s cable ports are dry and free of debris.
- Reconnect cables securely and tighten screws or fasteners removed during cleaning.
- Plug in the power and turn on the camera.
- Check the image via the monitoring system to confirm clarity, no blurring or glare, and normal camera operation.
