How to optimize the signal of a doorbell camera?

11 Mar 2026

A stable Wi-Fi connection is essential for your doorbell camera to provide smooth live view, fast notifications, and reliable recordings. If the signal is weak, you may experience video lag, delayed alerts, or frequent disconnections.

This guide explains several ways to improve the Wi-Fi signal for your doorbell camera.

1. Check the Wi-Fi Signal at the Installation Location

Before optimizing the network, check whether the Wi-Fi signal is strong enough at the doorbell installation point.

You can test this by:

1.Standing near the doorbell with your smartphone.

2.Connecting your phone to the same Wi-Fi network.

3.Checking how many signal bars your phone receives.

If the signal is weak on your phone, the doorbell camera will likely experience connection issues as well.

2. Move the Base Station Closer to the Doorbell

The distance between the Base Station and the doorbell camera directly affects signal strength.
If possible:

  • Move the Base Station closer to the front door.
  • Place it in a more central location in your home.
  • Avoid placing it inside cabinets or behind large furniture.

Even moving the router a short distance can significantly improve the connection.

3. Reduce Physical Obstacles

Wi-Fi signals weaken when they pass through solid objects.

Common obstacles that reduce signal strength include:

  • Concrete or brick walls
  • Metal doors or frames
  • Large appliances
  • Thick walls or insulation

Try to ensure there are fewer walls or obstacles between the router and the doorbell camera.

4. Use a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Network

Most doorbell cameras work best with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Compared with 5 GHz networks, 2.4 GHz provides:

  • Longer transmission distance
  • Better wall penetration

If your router supports both bands, make sure the doorbell camera connects to the 2.4 GHz network.

5. Install a Wi-Fi Extender or Mesh System

If the router cannot be moved closer to the doorbell, you can extend the signal coverage.
Two common solutions include:

Wi-Fi Extender

  • Expands the signal from your existing router.
  • Helps reach areas with weak coverage.

Mesh Wi-Fi System

  • Uses multiple nodes to create stronger coverage throughout the home.
  • Provides more stable connections for smart home devices.

For best results, place the extender between the router and the doorbell camera.

6. Restart the Router and Reconnect the Device

After optimizing the network environment:

  • Restart your Wi-Fi router.
  • Reconnect the doorbell camera to the network.
  • Check the connection status in the mobile app.

Restarting the router can refresh the network and improve stability.

Tip:

If you live in a large house or multi-story building, installing a mesh Wi-Fi system can greatly improve the performance of smart devices such as doorbell cameras.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
